US Route 66, 3,755 km from Chicago to Los Angeles/
Santa Monica, was inaugurated on November
11, 1926 and originally connected Chicago to
Santa Monica Beach, crossing the states of Illinois,
Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New
Mexico, Arizona and California. Replaced by the
new Interstate Highway System, it was officially
removed from the system in 1985. The road currently
exists under the name “Historic Route 66”
and is thus back on maps with this numbering.
